[3dem] Postdoc position - Understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria

The discovery of novel classes of antibiotics for Enterobacteriaceae, A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa (the most critically classed pathogens on the WHO priority list), is particularly hindered by their efficient and promiscuous xenobiotic efflux pumps that prevent the efficacy of new chemical inhibitors. The upregulation of these pumps in clinical strains also results in resistance to current antibiotics. It is therefore clear that developing inhibitors to these efflux systems, as well as enriching our knowledge of the basic biology of these pumps will be a major step forward in breaking the xenobiotic defence system of these bacteria.

A postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Achilleas Frangakis, at the Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, in collaboration with partners of the EFFORT consortium, to study efflux pumps using single-particle microscopy and cryo-electron tomography.

The mission of the candidate will be to conduct structural and biophysical characterization of the RND efflux pumps from pathogens, by using single-particle cryo-EM. Additionally, efflux pumps will be characterised in their native state using cryo-electron tomography.

Diligent, independent and committed candidates are encouraged to apply. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. thesis in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology or similar disciplines.
