[3dem] 3dem Digest, Vol 144, Issue 31

Dear Ben,

I didn't want to start an email chain.

Just highlight the challenges for our students and conference organizers.

Twitter has its limitations and advantages. 3dEM a smaller community, which is good. Overall, as scientists I think it's important to highlight these problems.

Borders are not good for science.

Best wishes from Singapore,
Sara

I was finding this conversation interesting, as conference Visas are an important topic (related-- I often think about how Visa policies make it hard/impossible for scientists born in certain countries to attend Gordon conferences in the USA, and I ponder what we can do about it). But I understand that India-Pakistan is a very sensitive subject right now, and thus let's let this email chain die. We could always start a discussion thread on #twitter ...what could possibly go wrong? ;P

Open world, open science,
Ben :)

Dear Angela,

No. We had given the required document clearance for many participants around the world and there were participants from USA, Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Italy, UK who got visa on time and they attended the courses. Also, many speakers all around the world came with the required papers we sent to them. We had given you the same papers. So it is not a problem specific to India. What went wrong in your case should be discussed not in 3dem group, I guess.

Again, the last-minute visa is not specific to India. I and my friends have got a conference/short term visit Visa for many countries in the last minute as you say. I have particularly experienced that with few countries.

I think it is not a good idea to discuss these few issues in the 3dem public group. I think we should discuss only the science here. Sorry I had to reply for other emails as you had raised an issue in a public forum and I had to clarify it. I hope we can discuss only the science here. Any concerns please write to me in person and not to 3dem.

         Many thanks.

Best regards,
Natesh

Dear Natesh,

No, it's not just a problem in general, but a problem in India specifically for anyone who wants to attend a conference/workshop. I had the same issue last year: I couldn't even apply for a visa to attend the 3DEM workshop because I was not given the correct "political clearance" certificate by the organisers required by attendees. This lead to me losing money for the plane ticket I had booked, not to mention weeks of frustration as I was ping ponged between the visa application office, frantic emails to the organisers (who insisted that I was given the correct document), and the Indian consulate in South Africa (who promised to look into the issue & never got back to me). Frankly, I have never heard of such a requirement in any country (certainly not a Western one) in order for someone to attend a conference. It also seems to be standard practice for visas to India to be issued at the last minute, leading to considerable stress for anyone who wants to visit. Either the government should get rid of this ridiculous requirement or conference/workshop organisers should seriously reconsider hosting events like these in India.

That's just my two cents.

Angela

Dear Gabor and Sara,

Indeed it is a big problem for scientists not only in India but it happens throughout the world. I have heard similar stories from scientists in India for conference visa application to USA and other countries around the world, ultimately as you said wasting a lot of time and money.

I wish the situation improves for scientists around the world.

I hope a day will come when scientists can go to conferences in other countries without visas ..!! I guess some countries have that already.

Best regards,
Natesh

Just a comment about my related experience.
I was invited as a plenary speaker by a conference in Kolkata in 2015.
Although I still do not really understand why I failed to get a visa
since I followed all instructions to the letter, this is my impression:
I applied for a "Conference Visa" and the material provided by
the organizers in Kolkata was incomplete for obtaining
such a visa, at least according to the people at the official visa office of
the Indian Consulate in New York. I was not able to find out what it was that
was missing, either from the consulate people or the organizers in Kolkata.
So I ended up not going. It has cost me a lot of time and money (for touristic
plans prior and after the conference that I already booked, not expecting
any problems). I guess that this is an Indian thing that I do not understand.

Dear Sara,
Yes "Applicants from all over the world are encouraged to apply". I understand the disappointment and completely agree, but in the end, only the officers at the Embassy have the visa issuing authority and each country has its restrictions. We had put our best efforts from our side with required papers for visa purpose, but ultimately the Embassy officers are the decision-makers.
Hope you understand that it was a situation beyond our control.

I would like to highlight that my graduate student from Pakistan, working in Singapore, did not get a visa to attend the workshop last round.

Disappointing and not good for science. I hope you do better this year,
