<div dir="ltr">I was finding this conversation interesting, as conference Visas are an important topic (related-- I often think about how Visa policies make it hard/impossible for scientists born in certain countries to attend Gordon conferences in the USA,
and I ponder what we can do about it). But I understand that India-Pakistan is a very sensitive subject right now, and thus let's let this email chain die. We could always start a discussion thread on #twitter ...what could possibly go wrong? ;P

<div>No, it's not just a problem in general, but a problem in India specifically for anyone who wants to attend a conference/workshop. I had the same issue last year: I couldn't even apply for a visa to attend the 3DEM workshop because I was not given the correct
"political clearance" certificate by the organisers required by attendees. This lead to me losing money for the plane ticket I had booked, not to mention weeks of frustration as I was ping ponged between the visa application office, frantic emails to the organisers
(who insisted that I was given the correct document), and the Indian consulate in South Africa (who promised to look into the issue & never got back to me). Frankly, I have never heard of such a requirement in any country (certainly not a Western one) in order
for someone to attend a conference. It also seems to be standard practice for visas to India to be issued at the last minute, leading to considerable stress for anyone who wants to visit. Either the government should get rid of this ridiculous requirement
or conference/workshop organisers should seriously reconsider hosting events like these in India. </div>

<div dir="ltr">I was invited as a plenary speaker by a conference in Kolkata in 2015.</div>

<div>Although I still do not really understand why I failed to get a visa<br clear="none">
since I followed all instructions to the letter, this is my impression:<br clear="none">
I applied for a "Conference Visa" and the material provided by<br clear="none">
the organizers in Kolkata was incomplete for obtaining<br clear="none">
such a visa, at least according to the people at the official visa office of<br clear="none">
the Indian Consulate in New York. I was not able to find out what it was that<br clear="none">
<div>was missing, either from the consulate people or the organizers in Kolkata.</div>
<div dir="ltr">So I ended up not going. It has cost me a lot of time and money (for touristic</div>
<div dir="ltr">plans prior and after the conference that I already booked, not expecting</div>

The course will focus on structural biology using Transmission<br clear="none">
Electron Microscopy and aims to teach the participants the basic principles<br clear="none">
and practical aspects of specimen preparation, data collection, Image<br clear="none">
processing and 3D reconstruction in Single Particle Cryo Electron<br clear="none">
Microscopy(SPCryoEM) and Cellular Tomography. This is a hands-on course,<br clear="none">
in which theory and practicals are tightly intertwined. There will be<br clear="none">
practical session to teach sample preparation for Single particle ?ve stain<br clear="none">
and cryoEM and data collection. Subset of participants will be encouraged<br clear="none">
to bring their samples. The topics covered will suit both the new entrants<br clear="none">
to the field as well as those who wants to acquire an in-depth<br clear="none">
understanding of the fundamental principles and practical aspects.<br clear="none">
Applications are invited from PhD students, Post Docs and Researchers<br clear="none">
(Faculties/PI?s and protein crystallographers) who wish to acquire<br clear="none">
knowledge in SPCryoEM and Cellular Tomography. Applicants from all over<br clear="none">

The selection will be based on applicants CV, current research project,<br clear="none">
relevant skills, future plans and most importantly the quality of the<br clear="none">
submitted poster abstract. Applicants should include in the section ?Details<br clear="none">
of Current research Project and Statement of Purpose? an explanation of why<br clear="none">
attendance at the course would further the applicant's own research. Having<br clear="none">
some preliminary data or exposure to electron microscopy /cryoEM/<br clear="none">
tomography will be preferred. PhD and Postdoctoral applicants should<br clear="none">
request their supervisor to send a recommendation letter, before the<br clear="none">
