POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Structural Biology Programme at CNIO has just been renewed, with 3 new groups and the incorporation of the latest advances and expertise in high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). A new cryo-EM microscope with energy filter and a Gatan K3 detector will be installed at CNIO in 2018, and we have also access to a FEI Talos Arctica with Falcon 3 detector nearby.

Our goal is to use cryo-EM to analyse the structure and function of large complexes of relevance in cancer, mostly focused on DNA repair processes. This position will provide the candidate a stimulating environment in cancer research, and in frontier cryo-EM imaging technology. The candidate will receive training in multidisciplinary research, covering from cell culture, cloning and protein production, molecular biology, cryo-EM, image processing and high-resolution protein modelling. The candidate will engage in one of the current active projects in the group.

ANNUAL GROSS SALARY: 34,800 € / year (approx.)

DURATION: up to 3 years. These fellowships will start in September/October 2018. Exceptionally, the starting period could be extended until January, 2019.

WHO CAN APPLY?
-       Open to candidates of any nationality
-       Students who are at the stage of being accepted into a PhD Programme for the first time throughout the academic year 2018/2019
-       Candidates must be Early-Stage Researchers; less than 4 years of research experience, without a doctoral degree
-       Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the publication date of the final list of selected candidates (29 may 2018).
-       Candidates who have been previously awarded with a postgraduate grant funded by “la Caixa” are not eligible for this Call
-       Candidates applying to the INPhINIT Programme cannot apply for any other postgraduate “la Caixa” Programme during 2018 and vice versa
-       Candidates holding one of these certificates (except for nationals of English speaking countries): Cambridge University FCE grade A or B, CAE or CPE; IELS score 6,5 min; TOEFL score 83 min.

English certificates can be submitted until February 15th, 2017 23:59 (CET / Madrid time)

-       At least three reference letters from university professors or other relevant individuals with whom the candidate has had contact either academically or professionally before applying to this call
-       Full official transcripts of records and copies of the BSc/MSc diplomas, in English. For BSc/MSc obtained outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), it is necessary to attach an explanatory document, issued by each university, which accredits that the studies pursued by the candidate make him/her eligible for a doctoral degree programme in the country of origin
-       Certificate of English level: Cambridge University FCE grade A or B, CAE or CPE; IELS score 6,5 min; TOEFL score 83 min

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:
-       Travel bursaries for training, short term stays, conferences, courses, consumables, equipment, intellectual property costs, etc.: 3,564 € / year
-       Possibility of being awarded a prize of 7,500 euros during the fourth year of PhD studies after the end of the fellowship. To obtain this award, the research fellow must submit the thesis within 6 months after the end of the fellowship
-       Complementary training consisting of a training programme on transversal skills
