Each hole of the unique HexAuFoil® format is just 300 nm in diameter, arranged on a 30 nm thick gold film in a hexagonal array. As a result, every HexAuFoil® grid has 9 million densely-packed, ultrasmall holes, compared to ~850,000 larger holes on a more standard cryoEM support. This arrangement delivers highly consistent thin ice (35 +/- 6.5 nm) for high-throughput, high-resolution imaging, providing sample preparation and data collection parameters have been optimized. ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Julio Ortiz, Sr. Software Product Manager, ThermoFisher Scientific" Julio began his career in electron microscopy at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), specializing later in tomography and associated techniques at the Max Plank Institute of Biochemistry. His expertise covers a broad range of techniques in cryo-electron microscopy, from single particle analysis to focused ion beam micromachinery for cellular tomography. After having served at the Netherlands Centre for Electron Nanoscopy (NeCEN), the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC), and the Forschungszentrum Jülich as Cryo-EM facility manager, he joined ThermoFisher Scientific.


Peter Harrison, Electron Microscope Scientist eBIC, Diamond Light Source. Dr Peter Harrison is an electron microscopy scientist at the electron bio-imaging centre (eBIC) at Diamond Light Source, UK with an expertise in membrane protein structural biology. He obtained his PhD in Life Sciences and Chemistry from the University of Warwick before undertaking post-doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, and Diamond Light Source. His research interests focus on the biophysical and biochemical characterization of small (>100 kDa) membrane proteins and membrane protein complexes.


Félix Weis, Cryo-EM Scientist, Institut de Biologie Structurale, Grenoble France. Dr Félix Weis completed his doctoral training at the University of Rennes, France, before going to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK, for his postdoctoral work. He then joined EMBL Heidelberg as a staff scientist on the cryo-EM platform. Currently based at the IBS in Grenoble, France, Dr Weis's research is focused on developing methods in the cryo-electron microscopy of biological samples with a strong emphasis on sample preparation.
