[3dem] Issue with Superdex 200 Increase Columns - Seeking

Dear Juan,

About a year ago we had exactly the same issue. Our superose 6 3.2 increase was fairly new and just like in your images the lower part split while hanging in the cold room over the weekend (not in use). Contacting Sigma did not help much as they claimed user error. I also tried to get a replacement for the plastic casing, as the glass column inside seemed fine, but these are not available (they used to make/sell metal ones). Finally, the Cytiva rep took care of it. Cytiva then contacted Sigma and arranged a replacement (apparently other people had the same issue). So I would try to talk to your cytiva rep directly, as writing emails and phone calls with the service centre were not very successful.

Good luck, I hope you get them replaced!

All the best,
Ben

What ???? Qu? es eso ???

I?m a Cytiva (almost) unconditional fan. I?ve never seen this. You have the coiled plug which is supposed to equilibrate any pressure variation, so this does not make much sense. Maybe the transportation company is going too harsh on them? Maybe they are coming already with partial fractures, and the HPLC or the temperature variation finishes the job?? That glass is quite strong, hombre ? but it is still glass, so it breaks if you hit sideways.

We have small and large Superdex columns (up to 26/60, ~300 ml of resin), you imagine how fragile they are to temperature variations. Even to move in and out from the cold room we attach the coil plug. The only times I?ve seen them breaking were after mishandling (user?s fault, pressure alarm higher than what the manual says, no pressure alarm, or clumsy hands). Never had a single one already broken on delivery.

I?d immediately call the commercial representative ? if you are using an intermediate (Sigma, VWR, whatever) call both Cytiva?s and that representative. They might consider changing the transportation company or simply the packaging ? if that is really the reason, and I can?t see what else could be.

Suerte,

?Happy New Year everyone,

I wanted to reach out with a question regarding Cytiva purification columns to see if any of you have experienced a similar issue with your equipment.

In our lab, we've encountered a recurring problem where several Superdex 200 Increase 3.2/300 columns have broken spontaneously at the same location (exit position, look at the attached images). This has occurred under various circumstances: some while in use, others during storage without use, and, incredibly, even a few straight out of the box after purchase.

We?ve contacted Cytiva, but they?ve responded that their equipment is in good condition.
I?m curious to know if anyone else has faced similar problems with these columns and, if so, what measures you?ve taken to address or prevent this issue.

I?d appreciate any insights or advice you can offer.

Best regards,
Juan
