POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, MADISON

An NIH-funded postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Wright laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, Madison starting fall/winter 2023/2024. Research in the lab is broadly focused on structural biology related to neurodegenerative diseases, cell biology, host-pathogen relationships among various bacterial and viral pathogens, and the development of cryo-imaging technologies in the areas of correlative microscopy, cryo-FIB, and substrate patterning.
The postdoctoral research associate joining the Wright lab will be a part of an exciting NIH-funded collaborative research initiative focused on the ‘Structural Biology of Alpha-Synuclein in Lewy Body Dementia.’ The research investigations are a synergy between the Kotzbauer group<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.kotzbauerlab.wustl.edu/__;!!Mih3wA!Cml14d6gS5cR2VfVO7ROeI8rcbRjTB3Nl220uVneQH5ftfikZ1gP4xyl19mwgdEQ0dZf4-CQ7v3yGVYkXNSw3hI$ > at Washington University in St. Louis, the Rienstra group<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://rienstralab.biochem.wisc.edu/__;!!Mih3wA!Cml14d6gS5cR2VfVO7ROeI8rcbRjTB3Nl220uVneQH5ftfikZ1gP4xyl19mwgdEQ0dZf4-CQ7v3yGVYkaZ2jGMg$ > at UW-Madison, and the Wright group<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://wrightlab.wisc.edu/__;!!Mih3wA!Cml14d6gS5cR2VfVO7ROeI8rcbRjTB3Nl220uVneQH5ftfikZ1gP4xyl19mwgdEQ0dZf4-CQ7v3yGVYkJgSeU8k$ > at UW-Madison. Overall, we are interested in understanding alpha-synuclein (Asyn) fibril structure in Lewy body dementia (LBD) to guide the development of Asyn-targeted therapies and imaging agents. Specifically, the research combines use of cryo-EM; correlative microscopy; molecular, cellular, and organismal approaches; and solid-state NMR (SSNMR) to investigate specific structure-function relationships associated with alpha-synuclein and Lewy body dementia.
Candidates should have an interest in structural biology, neurobiology, neurodegeneration, and should enjoy working as part of a cross-disciplinary, active research team. Background experience in one (or more) of the following fields is desirable, but not required: neurobiology, molecular biology, (cryo-) electron microscopy, and/or image processing/analysis techniques.

The wet laboratory is in the Biochemistry Department and is fully equipped for all aspects of molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and cryo-EM. The Wright lab has access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM resources in the UW-Madison Cryo-EM Research Center (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://cryoem.wisc.edu__;!!Mih3wA!Cml14d6gS5cR2VfVO7ROeI8rcbRjTB3Nl220uVneQH5ftfikZ1gP4xyl19mwgdEQ0dZf4-CQ7v3yGVYkEgzUa3o$ ). This postdoctoral position is supported by the NIH. The position provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wash U., and other partners.

Applicants should include a cover letter describing research experience and interests, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for three references.
