*UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA - HORMEL INSTITUTE*

*JOB OPENING – POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE - HAFENSTEIN LAB *

Focusing on structural and functional studies of virus and host
interactions, the Hafenstein lab is fully equiped for mammalian cell
culture, large-scale virus, and protein expression and purification, as
well as biochemical analysis. Researchers enjoy access to a
state-of-the-art in-house Cryo-EM facility featuring a Titan Krios
microscope equipped with an energy filter and K3 Direct electron detector.
A planned expansion includes the acquisition of a second Titan Krios with
Selectris and Falcon 4i detector, an Arctis FIB/SEM, and all ancillary
equipment for tomography. The Hormel Institute also houses an equipment
core including fluorescent microscopes as well as analytical
ultracentrifugation, ITC and BIACORE instruments, along with high speed
centrifuges and a range of other high-end microscopes. The core facilities
are further supported by dedicated facility managers responsible for
training, support, and usage of equipment.

Candidates should be prepared to:

Conduct and lead scientific research efforts in the study of how viruses
interact with the host.

Collaborate with researchers to provide a structural basis for
understanding the mechanisms of entry, assembly, maturation, and how
viruses are recognized by the host immune system.

Use cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography
(cryo-ET).

Although cryo EM/ET experience is preferred, a strong candidate who
requires training in Cryo-EM single particle and tomography will be
considered.

Conduct biochemical experiments.

Analyze research methods and data.

Write research reports and give scientific presentations.

Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory.

Assist with training of new or junior researchers and Cryo-EM/ET workshops
for the community.
