<p style="margin:3px 0px 0px;font-stretch:normal;font-size:11.5px;line-height:normal;font-family:Helvetica;color:rgb(33,29,30)">Focusing on structural and functional studies of virus and host interactions, the Hafenstein lab is fully equiped for mammalian cell culture, large-scale virus, and protein expression and purification, as well as biochemical analysis. Researchers enjoy access to a state-of-the-art in-house Cryo-EM facility featuring a Titan Krios microscope equipped with an energy filter and K3 Direct electron detector. A planned expansion includes the acquisition of a second Titan Krios with Selectris and Falcon 4i detector, an Arctis FIB/SEM, and all ancillary equipment for tomography. The Hormel Institute also houses an equipment core including fluorescent microscopes as well as analytical ultracentrifugation, ITC and BIACORE instruments, along with high speed centrifuges and a range of other high-end microscopes. The core facilities are further supported by dedicated facility managers responsible for training, support, and usage of equipment.<span> </span></p><p style="margin:3px 0px 0px;font-stretch:normal;font-size:11.5px;line-height:normal;font-family:Helvetica;color:rgb(33,29,30)"><span><br></span></p>

<p style="margin:0px 0px 0.3px;font-stretch:normal;font-size:11.5px;line-height:normal;font-family:Helvetica;color:rgb(33,29,30)">Collaborate with researchers to provide a structural basis for understanding the mechanisms of entry, assembly, maturation, and how viruses are recognized by the host immune system.<span> </span></p>
