[3dem] Gatan Cryo-transfer holder: frequent shutter problem

Dear Li,

The little black button you use to slide the shield forward and back can be adjusted to move along the push rod. I suspect that it could be mounted too far in one direction or the other. Any extra push or pull applies a shear force on the tiny copper screw that attaches the shield on the other end. (This happened to us once.) You can loosen the little wheels and move the rod gently from the tip side so as to position the button at the end of the travel. In my mind's eye I think it's the opening movement rather than closing that might cause trouble, but I don't have it in front of me at the moment. I don't think there is any effect of the liquid nitrogen or the bake-out.

hope this helps,

Michael

Subject: [3dem] Gatan Cryo-transfer holder: frequent shutter problem

Dear all,

We use a Gatan cryo-transfer holder 915 on our JEOL2100. The holder recently has a constant shutter problem: the shutter screw gets broken and the shutter is detached from the control tube. The holder has been repaired five times in the past 18 months. To avoid the problem, we maintain the holder above the level of liquid nitrogen at sample loading and no liquid nitrogen flash on the tip. We also do a bake-out cycle in a Gatan dry pump every 2-3 days. Still, the problem remains.

I am wondering if anyone encountered same problem and am grateful for your insight on this matter. Thank you!

Li
