Dear Colleagues,

I would like to bring to your attention an open faculty position at the University of Virginia - School of Medicine. The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics seeks to recruit an expert in cryo electron tomography at the Assistant or Associate level.

The department and the associated Molecular Electron Microscopy Center provide access to an excellent structural biology infrastructure, including a Titan Krios equipped with Falcon-3 and Gatan K3 detectors, a Glacios with Falcon-4 detector, in addition to several other screening microscopes. The University will also invest in a new cryo focused ion beam scanning electron microscope and supporting technologies in conjunction with this position.

UVA has a particular strength in membrane biology, biophysics, and cell and structural biology and fosters collaborative and interdisciplinary biomedical research. A link to the official positing can be found below. Applicant review begins on May 13, 2022. However, the position will remain open until filled with a second round of review beginning September 15, if the position is not filled by then.

Sincerely,

Jochen Zimmer

TENURED/TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION
in Cryo Electron Tomography
(ASSISTANT, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR)

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia invites
applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in cryo electron tomography. The Department
seeks to expand its strengths in structural, cardiovascular, cancer, and membrane and chemical
biology towards high resolution cryo electron tomography of cellular and subcellular structures. The
Department is closely affiliated with UVA’s Molecular Electron Microscopy Core facility providing
access to state-of-the art cryo-EM resources (Titan Krios and Glacios with Gatan K3 and Falcon 4
direct electron detectors, respectively, and F20 with CMOS camera). The University will also invest in a
new cryo focused ion beam scanning electron microscope and supporting technologies in conjunction
with this position. It is expected that the new hire will develop a strong independent research program
to use and further develop this technology to solve important biomedical problems. Applicants are
expected to be highly collaborative and integrate well with a growing number of researchers and
physician scientists in basic and clinical departments of the UVA School of Medicine. Applicants will be
considered for either an Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Tenure status and rank of the position
depends on qualifications. Highly competitive start-up packages will be offered.

Successful applicants will have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, will be highly creative, and must
have demonstrated exceptional scholarly success in their field. Demonstration of sustained grant or
equivalent support is required for appointments at a mid-career or senior rank.

R0032023. Complete an application online and attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of
research interests, and contact information for three references. Review of applicants will begin on
May 13, 2022. If the position has not been filled by September 15, 2022, a second round of reviews
will be conducted in the Fall.
