Hi Eric,

We don't see those gold particles (or only very few) that may come off the UltrAuFoils when using our Gatan Solarus. We use a hydrogen/oxygen mix for plasma cleaning and get excellent wetting for both carbon and gold foils. We get better spreading with hydrogen than argon.

Our settings are
O2 gas flow 27.5 sccm
H2 gas flow 6.4 sccm
Forward RF target 20W
Forward RF Range 5W
Maximum Reflected RF 5W
Vacuum target 70 mTorr
Cleaning time is typically 30 sec for Quantifoils and 2 min for UltrAuFoils under these conditions.

Hi all,
We have been using UltrAufoil for a few weeks now with great success in terms of stability and reproducibility.  However also reproducible are gold particles in the holes (see picture of an extreme case). These are certainly great for tomography  not so much for SPA.

Anyway is there a specific way to clean these grids in order to get rid of the unwanted little buggers?

We usually glow discharge our grids with the Pelco easyglow system and its default settings in air, one side only.
