Electron Microscopy

We seek an expert for the Electron Microscopy (EM) Core in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.  The incumbent will be responsible for supervising all activities of the Core which will be staffed by several experience electron microscopists.  The Core works with DIR Principal Investigators for high-resolution imaging of cells, organelles, and molecules with a variety of techniques including negative staining, rotary shadowing, imbedding, sectioning, tomography, metal replica EM, and imaging tissue.  The Director will be expected to oversee a dynamic research program focused on the development and application of cutting-edge electron microscopy methods for cellular and structural biology research for his/her own laboratory and will also supervise the Core staff, manage the Core budget, oversee training of Core users, and oversee the technical maintenance of all Core equipment.  The EM Core will have a separate budget provided by the DIR and he/she will participate in separate quadrennial reviews of his/her laboratory research program and the Core.  In the role of EM Core Director, he/she will interact extensively with NHLBI staff in planning and executing experiments involving EM imaging and is expected to maintain expertise in state-of-the-art methods. 

Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) and be an experienced scientist with significant experience in many aspects of electron microscopy and a record of independent scientific productivity as evidenced by citable publications.  Experience with correlative light/EM imaging, novel methods development, digital image processing and analysis, cryo-EM, and 3D EM methods are highly desirable.  Excellent interpersonal skills are a requirement.  Salary and appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
