A 2-3 year Australian Research Council-funded post-doctoral research position is available immediately with Drs Peter Lewis and Renate Griffith in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

The post-holder will investigate a number of RNA polymerase complexes from the model Gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis using both cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography, in conjunction with Dr Ben Hankamer at the University of Queensland (http://www.imb.uq.edu.au/), Australia, and Dr Rick Lewis University of Newcastle, UK (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/camb/), respectively. RNA polymerase is a target for the design of anti-microbials and the structures obtained during the course of the research proposal will serve as templates for the design and synthesis (in collaboration with local colleagues) and the validation by biochemical and structural analyses of novel anti-microbials. Prior experience in cryo-electron microscopy and single particle analysis and/or X-ray structure determination of large assemblies is highly desirable.

It will be necessary for the post-holder to make several trips to Brisbane, for the EM studies, whilst also participating in an exchange programme with colleagues in Newcastle, UK on aspects of the crystallography. 

Salary starting: A$55452-62657 dependent on experience (June 2006 rates).

Newcastle (Australia), a coastal city famous for its surfing beaches, is about 2 hours drive north of Sydney, and is well connected to all other major Australian cities by air. It is situated at the mouth of the Hunter river, and is adjacent to the Hunter Valley, a famous wine-growing region, in addition to many other costal and bush locations of outstanding natural beauty. Newcastle enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round.
