Dear 3DEM colleagues,
The Wright Lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is recruiting postdoctoral researchers interested in structural virology and/or cryo-EM/cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) technology development for in situ structural biology. Several positions are available, with flexibility to develop projects within and at the intersection of these areas.
Structural virology: We study the structures and assembly pathways of enveloped viruses, with current projects focused on HIV-1, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Our work combines cryo-ET and subtomogram averaging with virology, cell biology, and complementary structural approaches to investigate virus assembly and maturation, organization of viral structural proteins and glycoproteins, virus–host interactions, and mechanisms of entry and egress. Recent work includes resolving the native RSV matrix lattice and revealing the organization of matrix and fusion glycoprotein trimers.
Cryo-ET technology development and in situ structural biology: Our group has a long-standing interest in developing technologies for imaging complex biological systems, from CorRelator for cryo-correlative microscopy and MPACT for montage cryo-ET to newer fluorescence-guided cryo-FIB and in situ structural workflows. We are applying these approaches across systems ranging from viruses and cells to protein aggregation and neurodegenerative disease in cells and tissues. Current opportunities include cryo-CLEM, advanced cryo-FIB-SEM specimen preparation, large-field-of-view and high-throughput cryo-ET, data acquisition and analysis, and new approaches toward high-resolution in situ structural biology.
Postdocs will have access to an exceptional cryo-EM environment through the UW–Madison Cryo-EM Research Center (CEMRC) and the NIH-funded Midwest Center for Cryo-Electron Tomography (MCCET), including state-of-the-art cryo-TEM, cryo-FIB-SEM, correlative imaging, specimen preparation, and computational resources.
We are looking for creative scientists who enjoy working across disciplinary boundaries and want to develop an independent scientific direction. Previous cryo-EM/cryo-ET experience is welcome but is not required for all projects; backgrounds in virology, structural or cell biology, biophysics, microscopy, computation, image processing, engineering, or instrumentation could all be excellent fits.
Interested candidates should send a CV, a brief description of their research experience and future interests, and contact information for three references. Informal inquiries are very welcome.
