Dear Researchers,
TheLaboratoryforBioMolecular Structure (LBMS)
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7RqUJwgocg$ >at Brookhaven National Laboratoryis now
accepting general researchproposals through anopenproposalprocess for
the July – December (2021-2) cycle. The deadlineis *Monday, March 15,
2021 at 11:59 pm New York time*.
This new, state-of-the-art research center offers scientists access
toadvanced cryo-electron microscopes
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/instrumentation.php__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7Rpe1EyewQ$ >(cryo-EMs)forsingle
particle analysis of proteins and macromolecular complexes, as well as
cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) of cells and tissues.
LBMS operates in two 6-month cycles and all electron microscope (EM)
time is requested through the web-basedProposalAllocation, Safety, and
Scheduling System (PASS) <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pass.bnl.gov/__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7RpRJxLGoQ$ >system. There are a
number ofmodes of accessforcryo-EMs at LBMS including General User,
Rapid Access, and Block Allocation Groupsthat all follow a common life
cycle that involves the following steps:proposalsubmission, feasibility
evaluation, peer-review, allocation of EM time, scheduling, carrying out
the work, and reporting the results and publications.
To create a new proposal, you need to identify the type ofproposal, the
technique, and the microscope that fits your needs. Formore details, see
theLBMS User Guide <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/userguide/__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7RpW8AN16w$ >.*If you
already have an active proposal, you must submit an EM time request
(ETR) against that proposal for every cycle that you want EM time
through the web-based Proposal Allocation, Safety, and Scheduling System
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pass.bnl.gov/__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7RpRJxLGoQ$ > (PASS) system*.
If you feel you may need help during the submission process, please
create yourproposalas early as possible. Please note theUser Services
Office <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bnl.gov/ps/users/administration.php__;!!Mih3wA!XdkX3SjOnK1XuOPEx1KNt75Nnp65AsdqCI6oEsSA54TJAIiRstDRaZsI7Rq42eYvVA$ >will be
available until 5:00 pm that day.
