Dear colleagues
*Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, Birkbeck College, London***
*Department of Biological Sciences*
**
*Post Doctoral Researcher - Structural Biology(Ref: 11832)*
*Full time, fixed term appointment for up to 3 years *
We are seeking a motivated and creative Post Doctoral Researcher (Level
2) to elucidate inhibition mechanisms of mitotic kinesin motors using
cryo-electron microscopy. This work is funded by Worldwide Cancer
Research and will be performed as part of the research team led by Prof
Carolyn Moores.
Inhibitors of mitotic kinesins block mitosis and are potential cancer
therapies. Gain-of-function inhibitors specifically block kinesin
function by inducing a tight microtubule binding state. However, the
structures of these microtubule-bound inhibitor-blocked motors, and
therefore the precise inhibition mechanism(s) of these potentially
important molecules, are not known. The goal of this project is to
determine these mechanisms of mitotic kinesin inhibition using
state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy structure determination and
molecular modeling. The appointee will be a member of a team working on
regulatory mechanisms of cytoskeleton dynamics
(http://people.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/~ubcg62d/
<http://people.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/%7Eubcg62d/>)and will interact with
members of the Birkbeck Electron Microscopy group.
The Birkbeck EM lab is located in an outstanding, collaborative
environment for structural, molecular and cellular biology, in the
Crystallography section of the Department of Biological Sciences, which
forms part of the joint Institute for Structural and Molecular Biology
with University College London. The EM lab is equipped with a 300 kV
Polara microscope and a 200 kV FEG system with K2 and DE20 direct
electron detectors, and 120 kV and 100 kV cryo microscopes, as well as
sample preparation equipment for single particles, high pressure
freezing, vitrified sections and freeze substitution.
Applicants should have a PhD in structural biology, biochemistry or a
related area, and have relevant research publications.

*Salary:*Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale, which is £36,150 to
£41,318 per annum, depending on experience.
This is a full-time and fixed term position for up to three years. The
appointment may be subject to a probationary period of twelve months.
Birkbeck also provides a generous final salary pension scheme, 31 days
paid leave, flexible working arrangements and other great benefits.
