Dear All,

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) seeks a tenure-track Staff Scientist to become the “computational heart” of cryo-EM/ET processing pipelines at the institute. ISTA is a constantly growing international institute for conducting frontier research in life sciences, mathematics, computer science & physical sciences located within a beautiful campus on the outskirts of Vienna.

Staff scientists are fully trained researchers who provide domain-specific skills, expertise and experience not usually present within research groups. Staff scientist positions at ISTA are independent of a particular research group, and thus staff scientists are free and encouraged to work with any research group.

We are searching for a Staff Scientist with expertise in developing computational analysis workflows of cryo-electron microscopy/electron tomography data. The Staff Scientist should strengthen ties between structural biology groups (such as the Michael, Bernecky and Schur groups) where a staff scientist might act as a knowledge hub for devising novel software. While the staff scientist will be associated with ISTA’s Electron Microscopy facility, one can foresee interactions with the Imaging & Optics and Scientific Computing facilities.

The core responsibilities of the staff scientist will be to innovate cryo-EM/ET data analysis using conceptually novel computational approaches, to collaborate with research groups focused on EM approaches, and to potentially guide users through comprehensive structure determination processes. The staff scientist will also work with the IT department on data-centric operations.

- Proven experience of working independently in a high-level research environment
- Substantial experience in (cryo-)EM image analysis, with a preference for those with previous cryo-ET exposure
- Expertise in subtomogram averaging (STA) and single particle analysis (SPA) software
- Strong expertise with working in UNIX/Linux and high-performance computing environments
- Experience in Shell scripting and proficiency in computational languages, such as Python, C++ or similar
- Acumen in deploying neural networks for data analysis
- A proclivity for learning and assimilating new concepts, tools, and techniques
- Proficient in English, the working language at ISTA, and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
- Multi-project management acumen and a proven team player attitude is crucial for this position
- Experience in working on multidisciplinary projects is a plus
