We have an exciting PhD opportunity for an aspiring structural biologist to investigate how cellular translation responds to stress in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. La-related proteins have recently been shown to stabilise stalled ribosomes under stress conditions, and you will use cryoEM to elucidate the mechanism. Working directly with the system in the model organism allows in-vivo observations and experiments to be designed, e.g. selected mutations, functional studies, stress response phenotype—to understand the mechanism in live context.


This project will be with Dr Alan Roseman, Dr Martin Pool and Prof Graham Pavitt at the University of Manchester—with combined expertise in CryoEM, yeast and ribosome biology, and the molecular stress response systems. This funded PhD studentship is competitively awarded according to the rules of the Manchester BBSRC doctoral training program.
