A position is now open (at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) at the University of Virginia for someone in the area of cryo-EM or single molecule biophysics:

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for tenure-track or tenured faculty appointments at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor who address contemporary problems in structural biology and molecular biophysics. The department wishes to expand and complement existing strength in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Candidates with expertise in cryo-EM or single molecule technologies are especially encouraged to apply. The department has a strong research focus on human disease, including cancer, and aging but is interested in a wide variety of biological processes. Candidates should be committed to promoting diversity and engaging in collaborative team science.

Faculty at this level have demonstrated a sustained record of effectiveness in teaching, research including scholarly publications, and service appropriate to the discipline. Faculty will engage in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and are expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the

University.

Qualifications:

  * Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in the life sciences
  * Demonstrated the capacity for high-quality scholarship and maintaining and extramurally funded independent research program at the more senior career stages.
  * Expertise in cryo-EM or single molecule technologies is strongly preferred

The facilities for cryo-EM at UVA are exceptional:

Molecular Electron Microscopy Core (MEMC) facility at UVa: The MEMC facility is comprised of four transmission electron microscopes, along with ancillary equipment. A 120 kV Spirit with CCD camera is available for screening negatively stained specimens. A 200kV F20 equipped with a field emission gun (FEG) and XF415 CMOS camera provides imaging for higher-resolution imaging of stained and cryo samples. A 200kV FEI Glacios with XFEG and Falcon4 camera is used for screening and preliminary datasets for cryoEM single-particle and tomography analysis. And finally, the Titan Krios is environmentally isolated and equipped with an XFEG, Phase-plate, and a Gatan K3 direct detector with energy filter. In addition, we will be receiving an Aquilos-2 cryoFIB with installation expected by September 2023.
