 The Columbia University Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center seeks to hire an experienced electron microscopist as an Associate Research Scientist to serve as Assistant Director to support the Titan Krios microscope (equipped with Gatan BioQuantum energy filtered K3 direct electron detector) located at the Zuckerman Mind Brain and Behavior Institute (ZMBBI,  zuckermaninstitute.columbia.edu<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://zuckermaninstitute.columbia.edu__;!!Mih3wA!CCxGQqUtJyybnMOWcotHi8UxhRfrpByi1u8v69B-tkPiFHQkL1y4Bzzy8mf5xexOysugkkNfmH4jnTZhogx-vpeXSg$ >).
The candidate will be responsible for managing and maintaining the in-house Krios microscope as well as assisting with the collection of high-quality images, and training users in sample preparation and image acquisition. The Assistant Director will also provide guidance in current and future image processing programs and pipelines, and participate and contribute to state-of-the-art science and technology development.
The position will be based at the Columbia Zuckerman Institute, and will involve interacting with major users of the Krios microscope at ZMBBI, including Anthony Fitzpatrick, Lawrence Shapiro, Mimi Ho, Charles Zuker, and others, with many opportunities to develop collaborative relationships with Zuckerman- and Columbia based investigators.

The successful candidate will possess good organizational skills and strong attention to detail; will be able to work independently and also in a team environment; and demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate must have the ability to clearly document issues for service personnel to maintain instruments.
Qualifications: Required Masters or Ph.D degree in biochemistry, biology, biophysics or a related area. 2+ years of experience in Cryo-EM with demonstrated hands-on proficiency with  Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and expertise in Cryo-EM data acquisition software.
Preferred: 4+ years of experience in cryo-EM. Firm understanding of the principles of TEM. Experience identifying and diagnosing issues with microscopy performance. Experience of calibration, performance testing, electron microscope maintenance. Experience in data collection using Serial EM.
