Post-Doctoral Position in Correlative Cryo-Electron Tomography at NIH
[cidimage001.png at 01D82346.6524E7F0]
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to develop and use novel correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) methods for cryo-tomography on mammalian cell plasma membranes. The position is a collaboration between National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
Who we are:
Three labs, the Taraska, Hinshaw, and Mizuno labs are teaming up to develop a pipeline for correlative cryo-tomography on plasma membranes complexes. The Taraska Lab (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__irp.nih.gov_pi_justin-2Dtaraska&d=DwIGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=_HmqzOvPqujderyoV8UNhFeUqAvXMGCuCF2RI0IgPzL8_LKxGj_eEOJ1Vnebm2ZP&s=fWi_YM9EbojByteRBkuMfRazhLq0xWZk9x7oy02qmHw&e= ) uses a variety of advanced imaging methods separately, or in combination (CLEM) to understand how endocytic and exocytic proteins move and interact with one another at the plasma membrane. The Hinshaw lab (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__irp.nih.gov_pi_jenny-2Dhinshaw&d=DwIGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=_HmqzOvPqujderyoV8UNhFeUqAvXMGCuCF2RI0IgPzL8_LKxGj_eEOJ1Vnebm2ZP&s=vPHupFZZ2XhKfwG1o1NROWhyZvflLZ9tyvlvJ4CECWM&e= ) studies the dynamic structure and function of the dynamin protein family using cryo-electron microscopy and helical reconstruction. The Mizuno lab (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.nhlbi.nih.gov_science_laboratory-2Dstructural-2Dcell-2Dbiology&d=DwIGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=_HmqzOvPqujderyoV8UNhFeUqAvXMGCuCF2RI0IgPzL8_LKxGj_eEOJ1Vnebm2ZP&s=kQxu2ywEr-Qri3VsonTomHhiN3A8XKmznaXm4fsDj6E&e= ) utilizes single particle cryo electron microscopy and cellular tomography to study the cellular cytoskeleton and how it functions to control specialized cell shape in neurons, immune cells, or cancer. Together, the trio of labs has been awarded a grant from the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__chanzuckerberg.com_science_programs-2Dresources_imaging_frontiers_correlative-2Dcryo-2Delectron-2Dtomography-2Dpipeline-2Dof-2Dplasma-2Dmembrane-2Dcomplexes_&d=DwIGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=_HmqzOvPqujderyoV8UNhFeUqAvXMGCuCF2RI0IgPzL8_LKxGj_eEOJ1Vnebm2ZP&s=oQYTF2lxpLrXM13Fhg2GaoWW29BarINHnw3E0W9W6IA&e= ) to develop a correlative cryoET pipeline focused on solving the structures of plasma membrane proteins. This position will be a part of this interactive and dynamic initiative.
The labs have excellent resources for cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, and fluorescent microscopy. NIH Bethesda main campus has diverse laboratories and expertise as well as excellent research and clinical seminars, providing a superb and stimulating scientific environment that greatly enhances the postdoctoral training experience.
Who we are seeking:
If you enjoy creative and novel methods development, team-science, love microscopes and machines, and have a background or interest in quantitative data analysis, please apply.
To Apply:
Please submit your CV, bibliography, a brief statement of research interests, and the names of 2 to 3 references to: Dr. Kem Sochacki, kem.sochacki at nih.gov<mailto:kem.sochacki at nih.gov>

Application Deadline Date: Applications will be considered as they are received.
The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.
