Institute for Protein Innovation

Post-doctoral fellow position (Opioid receptor project)

Reports To

The Postdoc will report to Shaotong Zhu (Principal Scientist).

The Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI) is a nonprofit research organization advancing protein science to accelerate research and improve human health. Located on the Harvard Medical School campus in the Boston Longwood Medical Area, IPI is pioneering a new way of doing science that uniquely combines the freedom of academia with the high-throughput scaling of industry to take on transformative projects. IPI has built a robust platform and a repository of synthetic antibodies and other protein tools to share with the biomedical community through licensing and collaboration. The Institute’s deep protein expertise, collaborative spirit and fit-for-purpose antibodies are powering new biomedical and therapeutic discoveries for academic and industrial researchers worldwide.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position

We are recruiting a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral fellow who has a keen interest in the area of antibody discovery and G protein coupled receptors. The position is available through a very exciting and highly collaborative project involving three labs at IPI (Boston), Zuse Institute Berlin (Germany) and Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) sponsored in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The overall goal of this project is to combine computational modeling and in vitro biochemical analysis to characterize the dynamics of GPCRs in both physiological and pathological conditions. The successful candidate will take advantage of the antibody production pipeline at IPI to develop well-characterized antibodies that can distinguish structurally different conformations of GPCRs. Training will include the high-throughput production and characterization of antigens and synthetic antibodies; membrane protein complex expression and purification; in vitro reconstitution; computational MD simulations, and related biophysical techniques. The postdoc will conduct the experiments at IPI and is required to spend substantial time in the collaborating labs in Germany every year to receive additional training. This position has a comprehensive career development and training opportunities in preparation for a successful independent career in both academia and industry. This is a 3-year fully funded program with the opportunity of extension based on performance. We offer a competitive salary including a Boston allowance and generous benefits. The target start date is Jan 1st, 2022.

Qualifications

  * A Ph.D. degree in protein biochemistry/biophysics or structural biology obtained by the time of employment.
  * Experience in membrane protein expression, purification and characterization is preferred.
  * A strong publication record in peer reviewed journal publications with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  * Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, productive team environment, and willing to work collaboratively across different fields.

IPI is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit research organization and an equal opportunity employer. The Institute celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. The German Translation for Opioid. By Trisha Gura. Note: If you are a postdoc interested in working at IPI on this project, see the job posting here. An opioid crisis in the US is not news. Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate nearly 841,000 people in the US have died in the last two decades from a drug overdose, and more than 70% of those deaths involved an opioid.
