Dear colleagues,
The Department of Molecular Biosciences seeks to recruit an enthusiastic cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) Research Scientist to join the structural biology community at Northwestern University. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing instrumentation and contributing to structural biology research projects in collaboration with researchers on campus. The cryo-EM facility houses a FEI Glacios and a JEOL 1400 TEM. The Glacios is equipped with a Gatan K3 direct detector. The position will be filled at the Research Associate level with a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will perform a wide range of highly technical and complex tasks necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs. Primary facility management responsibilities will include but not be limited to maintaining equipment, coordinating repairs, training new users, scheduling, and overseeing the collection, processing, storage, and communication of data. The candidate will be required to review the literature and apply advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Maintain facility instruments to always ensure peak performance and high-quality data acquisition
• Train and assist users in the operation of the Glacios, this will include clipping grids, loading samples, microscope alignments, data acquisition setup (using either SerialEM or Leginon), setting up on the fly preprocessing, and managing data transfers
• Train users in negative-stain and cryo-grid preparation and screening on JEOL 1400 120 kV
• Help users troubleshoot issues with sample preparation
• Contribute to the implementation of new experimental methods in electron microscopy

Minimum qualifications:
• Masters or Ph.D. degree with three years of hands-on cryo-EM experience in a technical or research lab.
Preferred qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics or related field
• Experience in the use of JEOL or FEI microscopes and grid preparation instruments such as Vitrobot, CP3-Plunger, and other auxiliary instruments.
• Expertise in the use of current cryo-EM methods which include data collection (Serial EM or Leginon) and any one of the image processing software packages (Relion, Cryosparc, EMAN2, cisTEM, Sphire)
• Prior experience in structural biology such as macromolecular model building using Chimera and Coot and structure validation tools
• Excellent technical, communication, and teaching skills
Inquiries can be directed to my attention at yuanhe at northwestern.edu<mailto:yuanhe at northwestern.edu>. For full consideration, please submit your CV and ask for 2-3 reference letters to be directly sent to the above email.
