Dear Colleagues,

The M&M 2021 paper submission deadline has been extended a full week to allow for greater flexibility and more submission completions.

The new deadline is Thursday, February 25 at 11:59pm ET. The deadline WILL NOT be extended after this date.

Remember, even if you can only present virtually, you still need to submit your paper by the deadline to be included in the meeting! During the submission process, there is an option to choose whether you can preset In-Person or Virtually.

We would like to bring to your attention a few symposia of interest at the upcoming M&M 2020.

B01 - 3D Structures: From Macromolecular Assemblies to Whole Cells (3DEM FIG).
Organizers: Melanie Ohi, Teresa Ruiz, Cheri Hampton and William Rice.
• Structure and function of macromolecular complexes in vitro and in vivo
• Single particle cryo-electron microscopy
• Cryo-electron tomography

B02 - Cryo-electron Tomography: Present Capabilities and Future Potential
Organizers: Grant Jensen, Yi-Wei Chang, Danielle Grotjahn and Matt Swulius.
• Cryo-ET allows large macromolecular assemblies to be visualized within cells in a near-native state
• The range of targets that can be analyzed by cryo-ET is rapidly expanding to both larger and smaller
• Sub-tomogram averaging methods can result in high-resolution structures
• Many technical advances in instrumentation, methods, and software are dramatically expanding both the power and applicability of the method

B04 - Michael Rossmann Memorial Symposium
Organizers: S. Saif Hasan and Terje Dokland.
• Historical perspectives and current developments in the field of high- resolution cryo-EM
• Hybrid structural approaches to study macromolecular complexes
• Assembly and architecture of plant, animal, and bacterial viruses
• In-situ structural investigations of viral infection and assembly
• Structural biology of proteins involved in metabolism, immunity and pathogenesis

B06 - Multi-Modal Multi-Dimensional Microscopy
Organizers: James Fitzpatrick, Xiao-Ying Yu, Si Chenand Ben Giepmans.
• Multi-Modal Microscopy, Volume EM, CLEM
• X-Ray Imaging & Analysis
• Analytical Spectroscopy / SIMS
• Instrument hardware development
• Cryogenic sample handling / transfer • Artificial Intelligence based Image
• Analysis, Big Data Management

B07 - Challenges and Advances in Electron Microscopy Research and Diagnosis of Diseases in Humans, Plants and Animals (FIG associated)
Organizers: Claudia Lopez, Marcela Redigolo, Ru-Ching Hsia and Han Chen.
• Enhancement of sample preparation workflow for EM analysis of complex tissue for diagnosis or research
• Application of advanced or innovative EM techniques to study host-pathogen interactions, virulence factors and ultrastructural changes
• Ultrastructural characterization of diseases including the use of organoids, xenografts and animal models
• Novel approaches and applications for correlative or hybrid microscopy

B08 - Cryo-EM in Drug Discovery
Organizers: Leah Frye, Giovanna Scapin and Christel Verboven
• Cryo-EM in structure-based drug discovery
• Cryo-EM in optimization of potency and selectivity
• Use of cryo-EM to address classical ADMET issues such as hERG inhibition
• Rapid and efficient determination of cryo- EM structures for drug discovery

B10 - Cryo-EM at local, regional, and national cryo-EM centers
Organizers: Claudia Lopez, Elizabeth Wright and Clint Potter
• Sample preparation: screening optimization
• Hardware and software upgrades to optimize data collection
• On the fly data processing. When to stop data collection?
• Best practices in a cryoEM facility
• How to best store, analyze, and share your data
• Data processing: what are we missing?

There are also interesting short courses Sunday before the meeting and tutorials during the meeting, check it out.

This is a great educational and networking meeting for the entire microscopy community. Students can benefit from a reduced registration fee ($50.00), as well as Post-doctoral researchers ($195.00) and both will have ample opportunities to receive awards either before the meeting (make sure to check the corresponding box during submission) or during the poster session (for students). We look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting.

Sincerely,
Melanie, Teresa, Cheri and Bill
