Dear colleagues,

The Jinek laboratory at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in cryo-EM studies of protein-nucleic acid complexes. We are looking for a talented, goal-driven and team-oriented scientist with a strong background in single-particle cryoelectron microscopy. Research in the Jinek laboratory is focused on studying the molecular structures and mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas and related genome defense and editing systems, as well as eukaryotic mRNA processing machineries. These biological questions are investigated using an integrative approach combining structural biology (X-ray crystallography and increasingly cryo-EM), biochemical and biophysical experiments, and functional studies in cell-based models. As of January 2020, the lab has regular access to a FEI Titan Krios (equipped with a K3 camera) in the Department of Biochemistry and the Center for Microscopy and Image Analysis at the University of Zurich.

The postdoctoral researcher will manage and conduct their independent research project within the main research focus areas of the Jinek laboratory. The researcher is also expected to contribute expertise in single-particle cryo-EM in support of ongoing collaborative projects in the laboratory, closely interacting with PhD students and other postdoctoral researchers in the group. The laboratory has several collaborative projects that would provide excellent training opportunities in complementary structural biology approaches such as X-ray crystallography or biochemical studies.

Interested candidates should have extensive hands-on experience in cryo-EM sample preparation and expertise in processing of single-particle data. Experience with biochemical methods, especially protein expression and purification in bacteria and insect cells would be an advantage.

The position offers a competitive employment package, a supportive and highly collaborative working environment, excellent research funding and state-of-the art infrastructure. Zurich is a major European research hub that also offers an exceptionally high quality of life.

Applicants must hold a PhD in biochemistry or structural biology, and have a strong research track record. Please send your cover letter and a CV, along with contact details for two references, to Martin Jinek (jinek at bioc.uzh.ch <mailto:jinek at bioc.uzh.ch>).

With best wishes,

Martin Jinek
