Staff Scientist - Electron Microscopy Core

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking to recruit an outstanding contractor in the Electron Microscopy core.

Responsibilities Include:

  *   Contributing to facility service operations including communication with core facility clients; sample acquisition, sample processing and archiving; imaging data maintenance, etc.
  *   Conducting literature and database searches on relevant to the projects and instrumentations of the laboratory
  *   Lab maintenance including consumables and reagents restocking, operations with standard laboratory equipment (and with advanced equipment after training) and assistance with organization of lab events including training, demo sessions, etc.
  *   Keeping up to date with technical and methodological developments in microscopy and biomedical sciences and with methodology and instrumentation of the lab
  *   Administrative support of laboratory operations including ordering, procurement, invoicing, maintenance of records and inventory databases and liaising with the manufacturers and vendors for purchases, repairs, upgrades and application support
  *   Complying with safety guidelines and requirements by following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks (including toxic waste management)

The Electron Microscopy core places a strong emphasis on creating an environment where scientists and physician scientists can work together on disease-specific issues using the most appropriate approaches available. There are strong interactions with a wide range of independent research groups, and the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of the NIH.

The existing faculty in the DIR/NHLBI is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics (please see https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/research/intramural) complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (please see http://www.nih.gov/science/#campus).

The successful candidate should have a strong track record of the following:

  *   PhD Degree in the field of biomedical sciences, biotechnology, chemistry, pharmacology or related disciplines
  *   2-4 years of relevant working experience in a laboratory environment

  *   Proficiency with basic laboratory techniques including state of the art EM methods:
     *   Negative staining
     *   Chemical fixation, high-pressure freezing of cells and multi-cellular specimens
     *   Resin embedding
     *   Ultramicrotomy (including serial sectioning)
     *   3D EM imaging (TEM tomography and FIB-SEM, strong knowledge and experience with ion milling, SEM and FIB is preferred)
     *   Image analysis and 3D cellular modelling
     *   Correlative light and electron microscopy (on section and 3D CLEM)
     *   Possess computational skills in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite applications, in work with online databases and image processing
     *   Theoretical knowledge of biological sample preparation for microscopy and advanced microscopy techniques is an added advantage
     *   Experience in digital imaging and image processing software is a plus
     *   Good in time management and multi-tasking
     *   Can initiate and complete tasks assigned independently
     *   Can maintain and calibrate technical equipment and apply knowledge learnt to solve technical issues
     *   Flexible and able to work in close collaboration with other team members

Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
