[3dem] BSL2 vs BSL1

Thanks Matthjin, how about if there’s a difference in BSL classification between different countries? For example, the rest of the world that particular pathogen is classified as BSL2 agent while in Netherlands, BSL3. Should there be an increased in maintenance fees?

The difference in lab setup between BSL 1 and 2 are not that big. A lab manager can also decide to declare a lab BSL2 for a period of time, then decontaminate and resume operation as BSL1. TFS only charges extra service cost if microscope decontamination procedures are involved and parts can not be taken back. In BSL3 all parts stay in the facility until the lab closes. This means a company can not recover parts and reuse them. This will increase cost. Also decontamination procedures might damage certain parts that need to be replaced (other than the broken parts that needed fixing), which again increases cost. For BSL2 this does all not apply. Wearing lab coats, gloves, presence of a sink, ways to dispose of infectious material, a safety cabinet and modifications to the air flow I believe are required but are all “reversible” back to BSL1. There are no specifications based on disinfecting the inside of the microscope. Best is to contact your local TFS agent, they have a full unit for dealing with this, there are many BSL2 facilities worldwide that house EM.

Jaap is correct, BSL2 assumes standard lab practice, lab coat, gloves at the most, but no special safety/decon procedures. And no service cost increase. TFS does not want to deal with BSL3, so that is out of question. Our Krios is classified by TFS as level 2 instrument and my engineers come and go as they like (face mask is required currently… for a different reason). I do not see any cosequences declaring your microscope s BSL2.

Don’t think BSL2 requires that. BSL3 for sure does and requires elaborate decon procedures to be in place. UTMB goes for a SVC visit back from level 3 to level 2. It is then safe to enter.
