Research Associate 2, MS

Position Focus:



The Electron Microscopy (EM) Facility in the Center for Cellular and Molecular Imaging at Yale School of Medicine provides access to state-of-the-art EM and Cryo-EM microscopy and techniques to the Yale scientific community. Staff members in the CCMI EM core facility work closely with investigators on various EM/Cryo-EM projects by assisting with experimental design, sample preparation, image data collection and image processing/analysis. The successful candidate must be motivated, able to learn new sophisticated microscopy techniques and work independently. They will join a diverse team that utilizes a wide spectrum of advanced electron microscopy for the biological sciences. This is a full-time and budgetary position, the incumbent will report to the core facility director.



1. Designs, plans, implements and evaluates complex multifaceted research projects/systems, including method development, adaptation and validation. 2. Collaborates with PI to define research endeavors and the development of research hypothesis and approach. 3. Solves complex methodology, protocol, procedural and research problems through design of techniques, procedures and policies that will achieve research goals. 4. Develops long range plans for supplies and equipment to ensure smooth operation of laboratory. 5. Investigates, analyzes and evaluates complex data, data collection systems and methods to reach scientific conclusions and ensures the integrity of research data. 6. Collaborates with PI to coordinate major lab renovations working with Facilities, Health and Safety, and Purchasing to ensure deadlines, safety standards and purchases are according to plans and within budgets. 7. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience



Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to perform complex imaging and data processing procedures.

Demonstrated Experience in Electron Microscopy.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:



Master's degree in biological or physical sciences. At least 5 years of experience in biological electron microscopy. Advanced EM expertise such as FIB-SEM and electron tomography for biological science. Experience with correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM).

Job responsibilities:

- Able to learn and operate Focus-Ion-Beam SEM (FIB-SEM) for 3D data acquisition and subsequent image processing

- Develop projects of correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM)

- Assist investigators in viewing and imaging with transmission electron microscopes

- Train students or postdocs on independent operation of electron microscopes and ancillary equipment

- Support user cryo EM operation in the facility.

- Assist the facility director with educational tasks (classes, workshops etc.)



Requirements:

- A Master's degree in biological or physical sciences

- At least 3 years of experience in biological electron microscopy

- Ability to learn new skills and techniques

- Ability to perform complex imaging and data processing procedures

- High degree of reliability, organizational and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work independently and be team-oriented

- Special consideration will be given to candidates who have advanced EM expertise such as FIB-SEM and electron tomography for biological samples
