[3dem] side entry holder for autogrids?

Regarding my earlier post about a side entry holder for autogrids, here's a simple hack. The autogrid cassette sits comfortably in the 626-70 holder tip with the c-clip facing upwards. The Gatan clip ring then fits in nicely upside down, like a top hat, and snaps into place with the autogrid trapped underneath. I tried this at room temperature and couldn't shake or tap it out. We tested in cryo and the grid remained vitrified. There's some restriction of the area accessible for tomography that might be remedied with a larger hole in the clip ring.

Try at your own risk, etc etc, but it seems to work.

Michael

Hi Michael,

I’ve discussed this with Chris Booth from Gatan some time ago, a multiple cartridge side entry holder will for sure also help a lot of people with side-entry screening systems, preparing for later data collection in central facilities. With other people’s ideas for cheap side-entry low-kv screening tools, this could be quite a market.

Hi all, wondering if anyone has heard/thought/dreamed of a side entry holder for clipped grids? This would be very useful in mixed company (of microscopes, of course), and could enable analysis of grids post-tomography by non-standard methods such as EDS. Perhaps someone has experience in modifying a 626 tip for the purpose?
regards,
Michael
