[3dem] Moving a microscope

Hi Rubén,


We've played musical microscopes here at our center a couple of times (moved a BioTwin from one building on one side of campus to my building, about 1.5km from each other, moved a FIB recently to my building, about the same distance) and of course received a 200 and 300kV scopes. We did get insurance via Cornell in all of those instances, besides the movers'.


Cornell has a very reasonable insurance system that one can use when dealing with capital equipment. We've been lucky enough to not need to file any claims (as far as I know), and us managers help the moving folks (and we all have lived and still have usable backs and all 10 fingers and toes!). We've used that "internal" Cornell insurance system also when getting new instruments and we keep the coverage up for a couple of weeks, in case of delays in the delivery of the system, or other issues. If I recall correctly it's a couple of bucks/thousand of instrument cost (I've insured holders sent for repairs for <$100; so off the top of my head, we insured a cryo holder which cost like $60k for <$100 for a couple of days while in transit). That way we avoid buying fedex or ups insurance which sucks (ask Bill what happened when we sent a JEOL 3200 cartridge to Jurgen to get it machined and how dealing with fedex was a big pain in the rear). But I digress. I'd suggest you contact your institute's office for risk management (that's the name of Cornell's office) or similarly named place and check with them. Our management here is very good at moving and insuring equipment so it's been a good experience.

Hi everyone,

We are moving a high-end microscope (Titan Halo) from one Institute to another which is about 4km away. We already hired the services of a well-reputed company specialized in this sort of job, and they carry some insurance for the move, but very likely it is not enough in case something goes incredibly bad. My question is if anybody has gone through this process, did you get some extra insurance, and if so, for how much? (replacement cost?) Perhaps more importantly, did something bad happen during the move that ended up needing an insurance claim? (column dropped from a truck or something like that). Any horror histories would be welcome!
