[3dem] Falcon 3 question

Hi all,

Just to add to Neil’s point, the F3 on delivery has its fans set to max speed in the BIOS. Literally sounds like a helicopter. We altered these settings (I’d have to check exactly what, if anyone is interested drop me a line) to significantly reduce fan speed, its basically silent. This then allows it to sit happily on the power cabinet, as Neil described. We have been running like this since F3 install in 2016 and haven’t had any microscope stability issues, or server problems resulting from reduced fan speeds.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Becky

Hi Craig,

Yup. That's the one! If anyone else is curious, the 42U is the top most one.

For doing STEM-EELS it is heaven-sent.

Thanks Mariena, I remember looking at those racks before; it’s good to get some confirmation that they work well.

Did you use the 42U height rack? Our F3 Storage Server (I believe an HP Apollo 4200) has a TDP of <800W. Which isn’t too bad, those enclosures spec a thermal load of 12KW, which could fit quite a lot of the microscope rack-mounted equipment… it might be nice to throw all the noisy things in a rack like this…

Dear David,

We don't have a Falcon but we do have a K2 with DigiScan and a bunch of boxes for Spectroscopy and one of my supervisors found this company called Ucoustics (I think based out of Germany). We recently switched from aN FEI cabinet to one for the K2, DigiScan and assorted boxes (controller boxes, K2 PC, etc) and it has worked amazing.

The noise reduction is incredible and because it's so big, I went in and closed the door (I was 8 months pregnant at the time, so it's pretty spacious) and it was quiet (very eery considering the amount of noise the K2 processor generates). The cabinet has fans that can be controlled via a website, so it helps a lot keep the cabinet vented, since we found out the hard way that the K2 stops working if enclosed in one of those FEI cabinets. Oy! And between another manager, a student, and I, we moved and adjusted the racks to accomodate the K2 equipment as the cabinet is quite spacious compared to the ones that come standard with the Titan or Arctica.

Good luck!

Hi,

For those of you who have Falcon 3 cameras, what sort of server rack have you found to be best/most useful/etc.?
