[3dem] cryoEM specialist positions at UCSF

The University of California, San Francisco seeks to hire between 1 and 3
cryo-EM specialists, at the levels of Assistant, Associate and Full
Specialist level. The Keck Advanced Microscopy Laboratory at UCSF is
directed by David Agard, Yifan Cheng and Adam Frost. Our facility currently
houses a ThermoFisher FEI Titan Krios with a pre-GIF K2 and a post-GIF K3,
a Talos Arctica with a K3 camera, a TF30 Polara and a TF20, both equipped
with a K2; a T20 LaB6 equipped with an 8K CCD, and a T12 LaB6 equipped with
a 4K UltraScan. The facility is supervised by a manager who oversees
microscope maintenance and an IT specialist who oversees data management.
The facility has over 100 regular users and is continue training new users.

The specialists will provide support and training for the growing cryo-EM
community at UCSF. They will setup microscope for high-quality data
acquisition, loading grids for users, and carry out regularly microscope
performance test, testing and implementing new data acquisition
technologies; In addition, they will participate in various cryo-EM related
projects.

In addition to working on cryo-EM related projects, the specialist will
provide support and training for the growing cryo-EM community at UCSF. The
ideal candidate for this position will be a cryo-EM expert with strong

Required Qualifications:

For Assistant Specialist, the candidate must possess at least a master’s
degree (or equivalent degree) [HN(1] and is required to have previous
hands-on experience (3+ years) in electron microscopy, from operating
electron microscope, performing negative stain EM, and experience in
operating cryo-EM related sample preparation equipment. Some image
processing experience is a plus.

For Associate Specialist, the candidate must possess at least a master’s
degree (or equivalent degree) [HN(2] and is required to have previous
experience (3+ years) in all aspects of  cryo-EM, including operating
high-end instruments, such as Titan Krios, Talos Arctica and/or TF30
Polara, various cryo-EM sample preparation techniques, and extensive
experience in cryo-EM image processing. Previous experience and knowledge
about single particle cryo-EM is required.

For Full specialist, the candidate must possess a terminal degree (or
equivalent degree) [HN(3] and is required to have previous experience (5+
years) in managing or working in a multi-user cryo-EM facility, with
extensive experience in using and managing electron microscopes, such as
identifying problems of various systems, coordinating service, microscope
performance test, and extensive experience in cryo-EM data acquisition.


Preferred Qualifications:

·        Post-graduate training in field

·        Independent specialized research

·        Management experience
