    The Team
    An exciting opportunity to be a part of a pioneering biomedical research institute, dedicated to innovation and science. We are looking for a highly organised, enthusiastic, experienced and adaptable Electron Microscopist to join our growing team.
    The role is a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist within the Electron Microscopy Science Technology Platform (EM STP), one of 14 STPs that support science at the Crick. The priority of the team is to collaborate with Crick scientists to prepare, image and analyse their samples and return results to expedite discovery science. The EM STP has an unparalleled suite of microscopes, from benchtop SEMs, to high resolution cryo-TEMs, integrated light and electron microscopes, Serial Block Face and Focused Ion Beam SEMs, and a microCT. Where imaging technologies or workflows do not exist to answer a specific biomedical research problem, the team will strive to develop new technology and techniques tailored to the research. In addition to eight electron microscopists, the EM STP hosts a Microscopy Prototyping activity with three physicists who design and build new microscopy hardware and software solutions, including a new range of miniaturised fluorescence microscopes that integrate into microtomes and EMs for ‘smart-tracking’ in correlative microscopy, and new automated image analysis algorithms for EM image analysis. Following a recent recruitment round, we now have an additional position available within the EM team, as we grow to meet demand from the exciting and challenging research teams in this multidisciplinary institute.

    The Institute
    The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.

    The Role
    To take on this position, you will have a degree and (optionally) a PhD in the biological sciences, expertise in electron microscopy (EM) and the application of EM to biomedical research questions, and enthusiasm for working in a facility environment. Expertise in standard resin-embedding of cells and tissues, ultramicrotomy, scanning and transmission EM are essential. Expertise in advanced sample preparation techniques (such as cryo-preparation and correlative workflows), advanced electron microscopes (Serial Block Face SEM, Focused Ion Beam SEM, cryo-EM), other imaging modalities (light and X-ray microscopy), and image analysis are desirable.
