Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Now that the NCI-supported National Cryo-EM Facility (NCEF) has been operational for a few months, I want to provide a brief update on activities at the facility since its launch on May 15, 2017.

The facility provides access to a Titan Krios electron microscope at no cost to researchers within the extramural academic community. The decision about suitability of projects for data collection is made on a first-come, first-served basis by NCEF staff, and is based solely on the quality of the screening images provided. Users must also provide a couple of sentences summarizing the general relevance of their project to basic or applied cancer research.

Users are not required to have current or past funding support from either the NCI or NIH in order to send in an application.

The facility currently has one Titan Krios microscope that is equipped with a phase plate as well as pre-GIF Falcon 3EC and post-GIF K2-Summit direct electron detectors. Use of the facility is growing rapidly and the microscope is being used at essentially maximum capacity with waiting times of less than a month at present. To meet the growing demand, we will add a second Titan Krios microscope next summer, which should be available for use by Fall 2018.

If you have any questions about the facility or access to its resources, please visit http://www.cancer.gov/research/resources/cryoem or send an e-mail to nci-ncef at nih.gov<mailto:nci-ncef at nih.gov>.

Sincerely,

Sriram Subramaniam
