Position Summary


Weill Cornell Medical College in NYC is seeking a Research Scientist to direct its new Cryo-electron Microscopy Facility.  The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of this resource.  Initially, the lab will house an FEI Tecnai F20 with FEG for single particle cryo-electron microscopy.
The director will be responsible for oversight and maintenance of the microscope and support equipment, training and assisting users from the Weill Cornell community in sample prep and operation of the equipment as well as support resource development and writing/submission of grant applications with the goal of expanding the resources of the facility. The director will also interact with our Institute for Computational BioMedicine to assist clients with data management and analysis.

Position Activities


*

Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment and supplies. Liaises with vendors and facilities as needed.

*

Manages and maintains laboratory computer hardware and software. Responsible for establishing and maintaining systems for archiving data and experimental samples.

*

Trains and assists users in sample preparation, including trouble-shooting preps, operation of the equipment and data acquisition.

*

Ensure that safety practices are monitored and mandated safety requirements observed.

*

Performs statistical analyses of data. Prepares and presents internal progress reports on studies. Assists with presentation of data for external publication.

*

Provides creative ideas for new lines of research. Provides preliminary data for journal publications, presentations and grant applications.

*

Works with Administrator on all financial aspects of the core including annual reporting, budgeting and pricing requirements in addition to monthly invoicing.

*

Liaises with central IT for development of the core’s related systems.

*

Acts as liaison with senior HR Business Partner regarding core operational needs.

*

Manages physical space and needs utilization.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements




*

PhD or equivalent experience in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, or related field

*

Minimum of 2 years cryo-EM experience with proficiency in sample handling, microscope use & maintenance, handling of ancillary hardware and data analysis

*

Experience with single particle cryo-EM.  Experience in EM-tomography a plus

Management experience and/or experience working in a Core Facility environment is desired.
