Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Director for Electron Microscopy Resource Laboratory
The Electron Microscopy Resource Laboratory (EMRL) core facility at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has an opening for a Director to manage the electron microscopy imaging equipment, associated computer clusters and peripherals located in the core facility.
The EMRL core facility is equipped with a 100 KeV JOEL JEM1010 TEM and an FEI Quanta 250 eSEM, both of which are used for biological applications. For single molecule studies, the core facility is also equipped with a screening microscope (120KeV Tecnai 12 TEM), and a 200 KeV FEI microscope (FEI TF20) equipped with a direct electron detector (FEI Falcon II), and associated computer clusters and peripherals. Data collection with the TF20 is facilitated by software for automated single particle imaging.
Responsibilities for the position include (1) Assure that the facility runs smoothly, efficiently and cost-effectively, (2) Manage two staff scientists including a Technical Director who run, maintain and train users on the JOEL JEM1010 TEM and FEI Quanta 250 eSEM, (3) Run and maintain the Tecnai 12 TEM and FEI TF20, (4) Provide consultation, train new users, assist in sample preparation, data collection and data analysis on the Tecnai 12 TEM and FEI TF20, (5) Coordinate and document equipment usage and write and implement user policies, and (6) Prepare annual reports.
The candidate is expected to have Ph.D. or equivalent and at least 5 years of experience in single particle electron microscopy data collection and structure determination, and have strong communication and teaching skills. This position provides the opportunity for the candidate to directly participate in academic research centered on studying the structure/function of large macromolecule complexes associated with several different biological areas of research, and to interact with other scientists at the University of Pennsylvania.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter summarizing their background and interest in the position, and a curriculum vitae containing contact information for at least three people who can provide letters of reference to http://jobs.hr.upenn.edu/postings/21539
