    Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest 
ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters 
Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in 
Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

We wish to recruit an experienced and motivated scientist to join a team 
to establish and run a state-of-the-art cryo-EM facility for structural 
biology on the European Photon and Neutron (EPN) Campus in Grenoble. 
This is a Partnership for Structural Biology (PSB) project together with 
the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and Institut de 
Biologie Structurale (IBS) and involves installation of a Titan Krios 
with K2 detector within the ESRF. This instrument, complemented by other 
electron microscopes on campus (e.g. Polar/K2 and F20 at IBS, T12 at 
EMBL), will be open for external user access mainly for high resolution 
data collection for 3D single particle reconstruction. The tasks of the 
successful candidate will be to

- participate in installation, commissioning and running of the ESRF 
cryo-EM facility
- help users in data collection and preliminary data analysis
- keep up-to-date processing software and hardware in collaboration with 
local IT staff
- implement or develop novel methods in cryo-EM (e.g. automation of 
sample handling) in collaboration with local engineers
- co-organise practical training in cryo-EM for internal and external users.
- contribute expertise to in house structural biology research projects 
in collaboration with EMBL Grenoble group leaders.
- liase with the electron microscopists at EMBL Heidelberg and Hamburg.


    Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have the following qualifications

- PhD degree in the physical or biological sciences
- Several years demonstrable experience in cryo-electron microscopy 
(including sample handling, data collection and image processing) as 
applied to structural biology
- Ability and desire to provide a high quality service to users
- Ability and desire to work in a collaborative international research 
environment together with scientists from collaborating EPN Campus 
institutes
- Good communication skills in English
