Dear Colleagues,

Three Postdoctoral positions will become available in Fall 2016, when I plan to join the Structural Biophysics Laboratory (SBL), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Zhang’s new laboratory will be located at NIH’s vibrant campus at Frederick, Maryland, about one-hour drive from Washington DC. (https://ncifrederick.cancer.gov/About/)

Job description: Dr. Zhang’s group will apply interdisciplinary techniques (such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, solution methods, biochemistry, computational approaches, etc.) to study various aspects of the process of kinases and a set of other signaling proteins being recruited to signaling complexes and creating signaling communities, especially the ones that are closely related to human cancer. The elucidation of protein kinase macromolecular signaling complexes is an exciting and challenging task that requires the collaboration of experts spanning many fields in biology. In the long run, we aim to combine structural and functional studies to reveal the molecular mechanism of kinase complexes’ dysfunction and help develop novel reagents that may eventually lead to cure for cancer and other diseases.

Requirements: The candidate must have received a Ph.D. or M.D. degree within the past five years (or expecting one before Fall) in molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline. The candidate should have good oral and written skills in English. The candidate ought to be skilled in at least one of the following areas.
1. Biochemistry and molecular biology (experience in protein purification from different expression systems and/or SPR, enzymology etc)
2. Electron microscopy (experience in cryo-EM sample preparation and digital image processing). We will have excellent access to high-end microscopy (Titan Krios equipped with K2 camera); testing microscopes are available and the computational infrastructure is setup and ready to go.
3. Crystallography (experience in protein crystal structure determination).
The candidate must be highly motivated to participate in rigorous and innovative research programs, and possess excellent work ethic and team spirit: be able to work independently and efficiently and collaborate closely with members of the group and other labs on joint projects.

To apply: Please email a cover letter indicating preferred starting date, a brief description (1-2 pages) of past research, CV, and contact information for at least three references to Dr. Zhang’s current contact: pizhang at ucsd.edu. Please state your area of interest in the application. Projects will be considered based on the applicant’s experience, interest, and creativity.
Please use “Postdoc Application for Dr. Ping Zhang’s Group” as the title to ensure proper attention. The positions will remain open until filled.

Thanks,

Ping Zhang
