The Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) is an important part of the research infrastructure in Umeå. It is located within the Chemical Biological Centre (KBC) and was established by researchers from many departments at Umeå University and at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå. The facility has support from the Swedish Research Council for equipment and operation of high resolution Field Emission Scanning-EM and cryo-technology as a national resource and therefore offers support to researchers on a national basis. The activity is extensive with both service and teaching. During the coming year there will be at UCEM new equipment for high-resolution cryo-TEM and tomography. With major support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Kempe Foundation and Umeå University, UCEM will be hosting a national platform for Cryo-TEM with the most advanced equipment and methodology which will be available for researchers in many different fields. The UCEM-facility is led by a Steering Committee and currently there are two research engineers in charge of the operative activities.
