Dear Colleagues,

We would like to bring to your attention four symposia of interest at the upcoming M&M 2012 meeting, to be held in Phoenix, Arizona on July 29-August 2, 2012 (until 5 pm). We encourage you to submit an abstract and join us in sunny Phoenix.

This year the M&M conference will begin with a plenary session featuring a talk by Prof. Archibald Howie, “Learning from past epiphanies, successes and disappointments to assess future progress in microscopy.” Professor Howie will highlight the key advances in microscopy over the past seventy years, and provide insights into what the next seventy years in microscopy might hold.

The four symposia related to structure, ultrastructure, and technology development are:

A03: TEM Phase Contrast Imaging in Biological and Materials Science
Organizers: Mike Marko, Radostin Danev

Conventional TEM phase-contrast imaging limits maximum information transfer to a narrow band of spatial frequencies. This can be avoided by in-focus imaging with a physical phase plate. The theory, construction, and practical use of phase plates will be explored. In biological cryo-TEM, high-contrast, high-resolution imaging at low electron dose is facilitated. In materials science, the combination of a physical phase plate with tunable Cs offers an unparalleled opportunity forcharacterization of both atomic details and larger structures. Since the number of laboratories starting to employ phase-plates is growing, this will be a timely opportunity to learn and to share experiences.

Invited Speakers: Robert Glaeser, Fu-Rong Chen, Wah Chiu, Kuniaki Nagayama, Werner Kühlbrandt, Rasmus Schröder, Yoshiyuki Fukuda

A04: 3D Structure Determination in Physical and Biological Sciences
Organizers: Daniela Nicastro, Peter Nellist

This symposium will cover: integrative cell biology: 3D-EM combined with other structural techniques (e.g. SAXS), fluorescence microscopy (CLEM), proteomics and genetics, serial-section 3D-EM approaches, e.g. confocal, STEM, FIB-SEM and axial tomography, pushing the resolution in structure determination of macromolecules: from subtomogram averaging to femtosecond X-ray protein nanocrystallography, advances in 3D reconstruction and element mapping, e.g. energy-filtered, HAADF, and holographic electron tomography.

Invited Speakers: Sara Bals, Stefan Zaefferer, Ilke Arslan, Thomas Marlovits, Michael Stowell, James Anderson, Peter Nellist

B03-Structure of Membrane-shaping Proteins
Organizers: Jenny E. Hinshaw, William A. Prinz, Jason A. Mears

This symposium will cover studies on thestructure and function of proteins involved in membrane morphology and willfocus on: organelle shape and function; membrane fission and fusion; membrane coats, membrane bending and proteins involved in membrane lipid modification.

Invited Speakers: Vinzenz Unger, Leonid Chernomordik, Scott Stagg, Carlson Lars-Anders, Marjin Ford, Michael Stowell

B04: 3D Structure and Ultrastructure of Cells, Organelles and Macromolecules
Organizers: Elizabeth R. Wright, Teresa Ruiz, Kelly Lee

This symposium will cover structural andultrastructural aspects of biological systems resolved using advanced EM techniques and hybrid methodologies, and will focus on: eukaryotic and prokaryotic architecture, cellular metabolism, cell division and protein translation, cellular secretion, adhesion and motility, cell-cell interactions and cell signaling, virus-host interactions and virus structure and structure and function of biological macromolecules and assemblies

Invited Speakers: Esther Bullitt, Grant Jensen, Arne Moeller, Kenneth Taylor, Xing Zhang, Michael Radermacher

Specifics:
The abstract submission deadline is on February 15th. The abstract submission website will close at 5PM PST on this date. Abstracts must be 2-pages long and have at least 300 words. Note that 1-page or shorter abstracts are likely to be rejected by the Program Chair. When you submit your abstract, select any of the four symposia:
“A03: TEM Phase Contrast Imaging in Biological and Materials Science”
"A04: 3D Structure Determination in Physical and Biological Sciences"
“B03: Structure of Membrane-shaping Proteins"
"B04: 3D Structure and Ultrastructure of Cells, Organelles and Macromolecules"

Please see the full paper submission guidelines on the meeting website.

This is a great educational and networking meeting for the entire microscopy community. Students can benefit from a reduced registration fee ($50.00) and have ample opportunities to receive awards either before the meeting (make sure to check the corresponding box during submission) or during the poster session. We look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting.

Sincerely,
The organizers of A03, A04, B03, and B04
