We seek an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to join
the teams of Ariel Blocker (University of Bristol, United Kingdom) and
Keiichi Namba (University of Osaka, Japan) on a project funded by the
Wellcome Trust. These laboratories study structural and mechanistic aspects
of the function of type III secretion systems in the Gram negative
pathogenic bacterium Shigella flexneri. The project aims to generate a 3D
reconstruction of the T3SS needle complex and its distal tip to at least 10
Å resolution. Knowledge gained from the project will contribute to
development of new drugs and vaccines against T3SS carrying organisms.
The post is funded for 24 months and can be held either within the School of
Cellular and Molecular Medicine in Bristol or at the Graduate School for
Frontier Biosciences in Osaka, with regular visits to either institution.
Substantial, demonstrably productive, experience in the use of EMAN, SPIDER,
Xmipp and other freely available packages for classification and 3D
reconstruction purposes, is essential. Experience in electron and
cryoelectron microscopy image acquisition would be appreciated but can also
be provided. Interests in biochemical techniques for sample preparation as
well as in electron tomography would be added assets.

In Bristol, you would be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research
experience. Further information can be found at
<http://www.bristol.ac.uk/personnel/ftc/>. Alternatively, you would be
appointed to a fixed-term contract in Osaka. The salary range is £29,972 -
£37990, depending on age and experience.
