Senior Scientific Research Programmer

The Cryoelectron Microscopy Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego is actively looking to fill the position of Senior Scientific Research Programmer. The laboratory is recognized as specializing in studying the structures of icosahedral viruses and has more recently made significant contributions to the study of tailed bacteriophage and helical complexes.

The incumbent will manage all aspects of image pre-processing and 3D image reconstruction software development for a variety of projects involving icosahedral, asymmetric, and helical structures. Willalso have responsibility for porting applications to computing environmentsranging from workstations to large-scale parallel machines. As the researchgroup grows, it is expected that one or more junior programmers or consultants will be added to the team. All work by these programmers will be thoroughlyreviewed by the incumbent to ensure that implementations of algorithms are rigorously correct and that the highest software engineering standards are met.

Experience developing scientific software in C and Fortran is essential and knowledge of parallel programming, Perl, Python, and GUI development, particularly using Motif, is highly desirable. A background in structural biology or image reconstruction techniques, though advantageous, is not absolutely required, but it is expected that exceptionally qualified candidates with strong computational or applied mathematics skills would make the effort to develop a deep knowledge of the field after joining the lab. Strong writing skills are essential since the incumbent will be expected to provide technical content for manuscripts, progress reports, and proposals. Must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, both within the lab and in the wider research community, who have widely varying levels of computer expertise. Will be responsible for educating users in effective use of the image reconstruction programs and must be capable of translating high-level suggestions and feedback into software solutions.

Qualified applicants are asked to provide a CV that identifies areas of expertise and interest, employment history, a publications list, and they should arrange to have at least three signed letters of reference sent from professional scientists. Send this to Dr. Timothy S. Baker, Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive MC-0378, La Jolla, California 92093-0378. Alternatively, CVs may be sent by email to Ms. Tanya Lichtenstein (tlichtenstein at ucsd.edu).
