The University of Utah School of Medicine Electron Microscopy Core
seeks a new Director. The
facility provides tissue processing and image analysis for both
transmission and scanning
electron microscopy. The facility is expanding to include
cryo-electron microscopy and 3D
reconstruction image analysis.The Facility staff helps investigators
with project design and analysis of data.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A PhD in an appropriate field of science or an equivalent in education and
experience. Experience in independently performing multiple techniques
of the following:
cryo-electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry; immuno-electron
microscopy; morphometry,
laser capture microscopy; and performing imaging analysis on a variety
of types of images.
Experience in every technique is not required, but preference will be
given to individuals
with experience in performing multiple techniques. The Director will interact
with scientists at all levels and will share responsibility for results.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director will also be involved in configuration, operation and
maintenance of the facility’s
resources. Design experimental protocols, carry out, and analyze
results from sophisticated
and highly technical morphologic experiments including: scanning and
transmission electron
microscopy, morphometry and immunocytochemistry using electron
microscopic techniques.
The director will expand a comprehensive Tissue Histology Program to
meet the needs of the
research community. The director will also expand the cryo-electron
microscopy program, including
the operation and maintence of a FEG microscope, vitrobot, and image
processing computing
core.

a) Seek out, develop and validate new approaches
b) Direct technical support staff
c) Identify and work toward solutions of methodological problems and
train others in complex
technical protocols and use of equipment

The director must be familiar with the very latest technologies and
must develop and deploy
services that use these technologies to meet the demands of the
research community.

The director is responsible for:
1) Designing and maintaining standard operating protocols and methods
to offer as services
2) Hire and train staff
3) Manage all aspects of the financial operations of the facility
4) Troubleshoot any serious problems within the facility
5) Work closely with staff to train them in the newest technologies in
order to provide the highest
quality services for the facility users
6) Evaluate new protocols and new instrumentation
7) Implement emerging new technologies as services
8) Provide consultation services to the user community
9) Maintain quality control and user satisfaction
10) Prepare annual usage reports, justified budget proposals and
equipment requests

The facility is one of 12 facilities that report to Assistant Vice
President of Research at the
Health Science Center. A central office provides financial consulting,
billing, accounting, human
resources, informatics and computer support for these facilities. An
oversight committee made
up of senior faculty reviews operations and prioritizes budget
requests from all of the core
facilities.
