Matlab scripts (M-files) are now available for reading/writing data
files in SPIDER format. SPIDER images, volumes, image stacks and
document files can be easily read directly into Matlab data types for
processing and visualization. The files can be downloaded from the
Matlab file exchange:
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/22902

And Python programmers don't forget:
 - the Python Imaging Library (PIL) also accepts SPIDER files as one of
its native image formats. (http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil).
 - SPIDER document files can be easily processed using the Spider Python
Library, at
http://www.wadsworth.org/spider_doc/spider/docs/python/spipylib/index.html
(and also part of the SPIRE package,
http://www.wadsworth.org/spider_doc/spire/doc).
