Project Title: Structure and Mechanism of Cytoplasmic Dynein



You will be based in Dr Stan Burgess’ lab working on cryo-electron  
microscopy of cytoplasmic dynein motor protein in complex with  
microtubules, funded by Human Frontiers Science Program.  This  
project is in collaboration with Prof. H. Higuchi and Dr. T. Kon  
(University of Tokyo) and Dr. A. Vilfan (J. Stefan Institute,  
Slovenia). Experience of cryo-electron microscopy and three- 
dimensional image processing of single particles is highly  
desirable.  Cryo-microscopy will be performed using a Technai F20  
microscope fitted with a 4k CCD camera.  Cryo-electron tomography  
will also be available for this project. Some negative stain work  
will also be used for initial characterization.  Image processing  
will be performed using SPIDER, Imagic and EMAN on a 150-processor  
Linux cluster and numerous graphics workstations.  A PhD in  
structural biology, electron microscopy, biochemistry, image  
processing or a related area, and experience with and the ability to  
use technically sophisticated equipment are essential.

University Grade 6 (£24,152 - £28,839 p.a.) or Grade 7 (£29,704 -  
£35,469 p.a.)
