The Microscopical Society of Canada is proud to announce its 35th Annual
Meeting.

This four day meeting will be held at McGill University, Montreal,
Canada on 20-23 May, 2008. Short courses will take place on Tuesday 20
May, and Friday 23 May 2008. 

The scientific program features invited speakers from the environmental
sciences, biological sciences, material sciences, and the fields of:
electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy and
cryo-electron microscopy. The short courses will focus on SEM, VP-SEM,
3DEM, confocal microscopy (spinning disk), TEM, AFM, advanced specimen
preparation, EBSD, quantitative EDS and image analysis. Vendors and
manufacturers will demonstrate the latest developments in the microscopy
field.

Tuesday, May 20th

3DEM course: theory behind 3D reconstruction.

This short course will include different theoretical and practical
aspects of three-dimensional electron microscopy, including: Sample
preparation for 3DEM, single particle reconstruction, conical tilt
reconstruction, image classification, helical reconstruction, 2D
crystals, tomography, icosahedral reconstruction, CTF correction,
molecular docking. 

 

Wednesday, May 21st and Thursday May 22nd 

3DEM seminars: Lectures from invited guest speakers and selected
conference attendees.

For the 3DEM sessions, the conference guest speakers are:

The majority of speakers (conference attendees) will be selected from
submitted abstracts to the meeting. Emphasis will be given to students
and post-doctoral fellows to present their work. Candidates should
submit an abstract to abstract at msc-smc.org before February 29th to be
eligible for selection for oral presentation and travel awards. Speakers
not selected for an oral presentation will be able to present their work
in the poster session held on Wednesday May 22 between 5pm and 7pm.
Abstract must be send as PDF format, may include picture and must be
less than 2 pages. Travel awards are be available. These will be
announced before April 18th, dateline of the early bird registration

 

Friday May 23rd

Morning:  Either more 3DEM seminars, or 3DEM course (depending on the
demand).

Afternoon: Cryo sample preparation and demo on the Tecnai F20.
