SPIDER / SPIRE Update: New features and easier installation

The SPIDER package (System for Processing Image Data from Electron
microscopy and Related fields) has a new Linux release available from:
http://www.wadsworth.org/spider_doc/spider/docs/spider.html

New features include an updated version of Spire (spire_linux-1.5.3),
the SPIDER Reconstruction Engine that allows users to run SPIDER
procedure files from a graphical interface while keeping track of data
files created during a project.  Spire installation has been greatly
simplified and tested under SuSe 10.2, Red Hat 4, Xubuntu, and Zenwalk
Linux distributions.  The latest release comes with its own Python and
all the prerequisite Python libraries needed to run Spire and the
associated graphical tools.  The new Spire distribution also comes with
SPIDER procedure files for single particle reconstruction following the
methods just published in Nature Protocols 
(DOI number 10.1038/nprot.2008.156)

Other new SPIDER features in this release include:

1) Faster image alignment using 'AP REF' & 'AP SH'.  
2) Improved MPI support for parallel alignment and back projection
   operations.  
3) Linux executables no longer limited to four OMP processes.  
4) Up to 10X faster motif / signature search, by moving
   work previously done at procedure level inside new SPIDER operations.

SPIDER is Open Source Software released under the GPL and we welcome
you to provide software or suggestions for new operations and
capabilities or to improve its operation.
