The Cryoelectron Microscopy facility at the New York Structural
Biology Center seeks an individual with experience in computational
aspects of structure determination. The NYSBC facility serves a
consortium of institutions from New York who investigate a wide range
of different biological subjects. The group at NYSBC currently
includes scientific staff with strong expertise in sample preparation
and data collection and, by supporting computational activities at the
same level, we aim to tap into the tremendous opportunities for
collaboration with affiliated investigators. The individual we seek
would specifically oversee facilities for image processing, structure
determination and map interpretation at NYSBC, thus providing a
collaborative resource for both in-house and external users. In
addition, this individual would be responsible for implementing a
variety of software packages for automated data collection from the
electron microscopes. The Center maintains a staff for general IT
support, so this position is specifically focused on scientific
applications. As a result, significant experience in electron
microscopy and relevant image processing packages is required. The EM
facility has been open since summer 2004 and currently houses a Tecnai
F20 microscope together with all the relevant ancillary equipment.
Three additional microscopes will be installed over the next 6-12
months, including a 300kV microscope equipped with a liquid He stage
and an energy filter. In addition, NYSBC houses unparalleled
instrumentation for NMR spectroscopy and administers a beamline at the
nearby Brookhaven synchotron. The combination of this advanced
instrumentation and the outstanding group of scientists at the
participating institutions, means that NYSBC is positioned to become a
hub for structural biology in general, and electron microscopy in
particular. Interested parties should send curriculum vitae to David
Stokes (stokes at nysbc.org) with names of three references. For more
information, see http://www.nysbc.org.
