Facilities Manager in Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Section of Structural Biology, The Institute of Cancer Research

Chester Beatty Laboratories, Chelsea, London

The Section of Structural Biology plays a key role in defining the structural basis for the function of proteins and complexes implicated in cancer. As Facilities Manager you will assist in setting up of the new cryo-electron microscopy facility for structural studies on macromolecular protein complexes within the Section and then be responsible its day to day running. The major focus of the work will be data collection for structure determination by single particle methodology alongside some electron crystallography and electron tomography studies. You will be expected to collect data for a number of projects as well as participate in the resulting image analysis.

The facility will be fully equipped for cryo-EM studies including Tecnai F20 and Tecnai T12 electron microscopes. An important aspect of the job will be to assist and enable colleagues across The Institute and structural biologists at the CR-UK London Research Institute to perform studies on proteins relevant to their own experiments.

Applicants should be educated to degree or HNC/D level (a PhD would be desirable) and have a minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience in a relevant field. This should include experience in high resolution transmission electron microscopy, preferably in the use of high voltage field emission instruments for cryo-electron microscopy of biological macromolecules. Experience in single particle image analysis would also be an advantage.

The position is available for a period of 5 years with a starting salary in the range £33,224 to £37,443 p.a. inclusive, based on skills and previous experience.
